Pets In Need No More

Imagine working outdoors one day in the cold of winter. Nearby is an abandoned house, left empty when the family packed up and moved unexpectedly. Hard times are going around. The house remained empty for some time, except for a dog that seemed to come and go on occasion, seeking shelter from the cold, no doubt. Now she too has gone. Working in your yard one day, close to the abandoned structure, you hear a faint sound and assume the stray dog has returned. You have left food out for her, hoping to keep her going through the season, so you move closer.

What you find is a wriggling mass – puppies – alone, freezing, and malnourished. You take them in. They are weak, and one of the pups has somehow been injured. Yes, hard times are going around, and you wonder how you can manage. Your own resources are limited too. But you don’t want to give up on this youngster. He’s already had a rough start, and you want to make it better, maybe even give him and his sibling the safe, loving home they deserve.

Hoping for the best, you name the little one Duck, and take him to the nearest veterinary practice for an exam. They confirm your fears, but they also understand your dilemma. They know of a resource that may be able to help, and they apply for that help on Duck’s behalf. It is granted, thanks to the generosity of people who also believe pets like Duck deserve better. The practice allows you to make payments on the balance, something veterinary practices can rarely afford to do when so many are in need. Duck, though, knows he’s been given a second chance, and he fights hard. He heals, growing into a stronger puppy, thanks to you and everyone who helped him. This second chance has not been wasted.

How many pets have been helped through the AAHA Helping Pets Fund? Thousands! Since 2005, more than 3,000 companion animals have received assistance for emergency and urgent care through AAHA-accredited veterinary practices. Since January 2010, we’ve helped 250 pets through grants totaling more than $75,000. It’s a joy to be able to help so many!

Grants are made possible only through the support of our donors, people like you who believe in our mission and want to help us achieve it. Please contact us by telephone or email if you’d like to learn more about the AAHA Helping Pets Fund.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

Who doesn’t love to see the sweet faces of dogs and cats, rabbits, turtles, hamsters? Photos are an important piece of telling our story. Have you received a grant from the AAHA Helping Pets Fund? Do you have photos of the pet(s) you’ve helped? If so, we’d love to see them! Please send them to us via email at helpingpets@aahanet.org. We want to share with the world what we’ve accomplished together.
